MENDOZA
WINERY
Nestled within the arid yet fertile embrace of Mendoza, Argentina, this winery rises as a homage to the land that shapes its craft. Designed to merge with the essence of its surroundings, this architectural marvel redefines both the spirit of winemaking and the experience of architecture in harmony with nature.
LOCATION
Mendoza, Argentina
At its heart, the project draws inspiration from the way rivers carve life into drylands, their flows meandering across vast expanses, nourishing and shaping the landscape. Here, the architecture replicates this organic genesis. The structure emerges from the edges of the land, growing incrementally in both form and significance, ascending to its highest point at the neural center—the sanctum where the alchemy of winemaking unfolds.
The winery's form is deeply rooted in the materials and textures of the region. Local stone, earth, and reclaimed timber create a tactile dialogue with the terrain, blending into the soil’s palette of warm ochres and deep browns. Each material has been chosen not merely for its availability but for its historical and emotional resonance. Adobe walls nod to ancestral construction methods, while contemporary interpretations of traditional techniques offer a bridge between the past and present.
The Process Embodied
The spatial narrative mirrors the winemaking process itself. Visitors begin at the periphery, where the architecture flows outward like nascent vines, symbolizing growth and potential. These spaces host educational areas, where guests can explore the foundational elements of viticulture: the soil, the vines, and the microclimates that define Mendoza's terroir.
As the journey progresses, pathways converge toward the winery’s neural center. This core is a soaring space where light filters through intricate perforations in the structure, reminiscent of sunlight dancing through vineyard canopies. It is here that grapes are transformed, their essence distilled into the wines that speak of this unique land. This space is both monumental and intimate, capturing the magic of creation in a place that feels sacred yet accessible.
A Place to Stay, a Place to Reflect
Beyond its role as a winery, the project embraces hospitality with a high-end residential hotel. Designed for visitors who seek immersion in the rhythms of winemaking, the residence is a series of private retreats embedded within the landscape. Each suite opens to sweeping views of the Andes, framed by vineyards that stretch into the horizon. The design prioritizes tranquility, with materials that age gracefully, echoing the passage of time—an intrinsic quality of both wine and architecture.
Central to the hospitality offering is a subterranean cave—a masterpiece of spatial drama and exclusivity. This underground sanctuary, carved into the earth, is reserved for the winery’s most exceptional vintages, rare distillates, and the intimate gatherings of its owners and special guests. The cave’s vaulted chambers are designed to maintain the ideal conditions for aging while providing a setting imbued with mystery and reverence.
Architecture in Dialogue with Nature
The design leverages the unique climatic conditions of Mendoza. The arid environment is harnessed for natural cooling through passive ventilation systems and earth-sheltered structures. Water, a precious resource in this region, is celebrated and conserved through reflective pools that not only regulate temperatures but echo the distant glimmer of the Andes’ snowcaps. Solar energy powers much of the operation, ensuring that the winery treads lightly upon the land that sustains it.
The roofscape of the central structure is a continuation of the surrounding terrain, planted with native flora that enhances biodiversity and anchors the building to its site. As vines grow over trellised extensions, the architecture itself becomes part of the vineyard, blurring the boundaries between the built and natural environments.
A Poetic Experience
This winery is more than a place of production; it is an ode to the land, a celebration of craft, and a sanctuary for those who wish to connect with the profound rhythms of winemaking. Its spaces are both monumental and personal, its materials both enduring and ephemeral, and its design both timeless and forward-thinking.
Here, architecture and nature entwine to tell the story of wine: a narrative of transformation, rooted in the earth, reaching for the heavens, and shared with the world. This is a winery not just to visit but to experience, a place where every detail whispers of the profound relationship between humanity, craft, and the land that nourishes them both.
